As someone already said, this is huge. And why you would choose not to use them? At-will powers (green cards) may be used every turn. You never flip them.

Usually, yes (there is one character with an attack that causes 1 hit automatically, but I don't remember if it is in Ravenloft or one of the other games).
Yes, unfortunately the attack bonus (critical hit) is only on level 2. As we only killed one monster, none of us could level up.
I'm not sure why you think that critical hits are important. Monsters that require more than 1 hit to kill carry the hits taken and never heal themselves (the troll from Drizzt being the sole exception, I think, not counting villains). Leveling up is difficult, and critical hits are quite rare. You need to roll 20 on your hero phase to level up, then roll 20 again to cause a critical hit.
