Just in case someone did not see the official statement yet: In the rulebook which is available for download on the WotC homepage, there is a FAQ at the very last page. It states clearly that only items count, and that encounter cards after sunset are drawn in addition to normal draws...
My family and I just played this scenario tonight and thanks to this thread and our own common sense interpretations, we ended up playing the rules much like Charlie Chuckle did above:
All treasure cards count before sunset.
After sunset, discarded cards before sunset still count, but treasure cards discarded after sunset don't count anymore.
You cannot escape the dungeon before sunset, otherwise you might leave resources that Count Straud can use against you later. This also creates a more interesting game.
After sunset, draw a encounter at beginning of the villan phase (before villan phase), afterwards draw another encounter if the villan phase asks you to do so.
Now seeing that WoTC FAQ, I find the "official" ruling a ridiculous way of playing this scenario. It is nigh impossible to win when only items count unless you're extremely lucky. This is especially so after the sun sets and each player is theoretically drawing 2 encounters each turn. I implore any new players to ignore that "official" ruling and go with mine and Charlie's interpretations.
I couldn't agree more.
Have tried this scenario 4 times in a row with varied combinations of characters and unless you are stacking the cards to draw items from the treasure pile, you will lose and lose hard.
