One thing which is important in differentiating the characters is their special powers (Dailies and Utilities). These need to be used, but new players often tend to try and save them up for the big monsters. In fact it's often better to use them as soon as it feels necessary - usually you run into trouble after a few turns. This is partly because there are a few ways to replenish powers (e.g. other characters, encounters and items), but also because it's fun to use them and helps with the problem you raised.
