That does sound like a really cool way of handling initiative. I don't have any good cards for the heroes yet but I should think about getting some. Did you print off your own or order them through Artscow?

Laser printer onto 110lb card stock, 2 layers. Although they don't shuffle quite like the originals. You don't want the hero cards to clump together.
You could put stickers on some Adventure treasure cards to test the system.

If you just want random initiative, you could have the stack face down,
but having some control over the stack is fun.

For extra complexity, you could also have a Stack Deck, with cards like "Nearest Monster Surprised", "+2 Cover""Gain an Extra Action""Nearest Monster moves adjacent and grabs you, Immobilized", "Total Defense", you shuffle one Stack Deck card into the stack at the start of each turn. Then agonise over which 2 cards to swap.

Manipulating the stack is a teeny bit gamey, but the Hero/Explore/Villain phases are a bit board gamey too.
