I'm here to say some positive comment on your variant.
We played several sessions and it was a blast every time, but I need to add that we played only with TOE and LOD components, (WOA is on the way).
We tested it mostly with 2 and with 3 players we played it this Sunday.

As we mixed all tiles from both boxes, game was set up with first 12 random tiles then added 4 with broken door mixed in. As broken door will reveal which villain will be added. From low hero lvl's we used only minor villains after that we added for every slain one greater. *dice roll was determine this situation) Also if at least one hero leveled up to second, for next adventure, the event card from LOD "do not place a monster" will mean add a random villain.
Treasure cards were separated in two decks, one with fortunes and one with items only. Items could be collected only if a hero pulls up 4 or more xp monsters (this I think should be increased to 5 or even better for every hero lvl up - one up).
For the LOD tiles we were using 2xD10 to see how many monsters needs to be putted (33%) 0-3 monsters for 1st lvl and 1-3 for 2nd. For 3rd this will be increased either 1-4 (25%), 5th 2-4, 6th 2-4+villain or something like that.

Thanks and happy gaming

Second villain was easily dealt

I've just borrowed camera and shoot a few pictures, those are only for now, probably more in our next session ;)
